Chinese Premier1 Li Keqiang has laid out four principles for deepening China-Africa cooperation during his speech at the headquarters of the African Union. He said these were treating each other sincerely and equally; consolidating2 solidarity3 and mutual4 trust; jointly5 pursuing inclusive development and promoting innovation in bilateral6 practical cooperation. Premier Li also stressed on the importance of financial cooperation between China and Africa.
For more insight on China-African ties, joining us now in the studio are Su Xiaohui, an assistant researcher at the China Institute of International Studies. And we also have a Kenyan guest Bob Wekesa, a research associate at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. He is currently reading for a PhD at the Communication University of China. Thank you for joining us.
Q1. Let’s first come to Su Xiaohui. So far, the main focus of economic cooperation has been mining and infrastructure7. Does Premier Li Keqiang’s speech indicate that this will change?
Q2. My second question goes to Bob Wekesa. China’s economic approach to Africa has sparked a lot of debate. Some say China only considers its own economic interest and South African President Jacob Zuma once said such an unbalanced pattern of trade is unsustainable in the long term. What’s your take on that?
Q3. How would you define China’s aid to Africa, Ms. Su? What’s the biggest challenge for the future cooperation?
Q4. Let’s consider the thing from a broader context. How are closer relations between China and Africa influencing the rest of the world, not just economically, but in policy making and other things?
