Egypt has appointed Hazem Khairat as its ambassador to Israel, ending a three year vacancy in the post.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry says Hazem Khairat arrived in Israel Friday, and immediately adopted his duties as Egypt's envoy. The new appointment follows improved relations between the two countries under President Sisi's administration.
Both sides have agreed to cooperate in securing both the Gaza Strip and Sinai Peninsula. Egypt had no ambassador in Israel since November 2012, when the then President Mohammad Morsi withdrew his envoy, in reaction to Israel's Operation Pillar of Defense in the Gaza Strip at the time.
The two nations later saw relations improve after Abdel Fatah al-Sisi became President of Egypt in 2014. The Israeli embassy in Egypt also reopened last September.
