Suspended Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has addressed the nation after the Senate voted to put her on trial. She condemned the impeachment process as a coup and a farce.
Rousseff said she committed only errors instead of any impeachable crimes, as the government has repaid all debts to state-run banks. She said the impeachment process threatens Brazil's democracy and social advances in recent years, and vows to fight the impeachment by all legal means.
Following a marathon session running into early Thursday morning local time, 55 senators voted in favour of putting the President on trial for breaking budget laws. The result removes Brazil's first female president from office, ending more than 13 years of leftist rule. Vice President Michel Temer will take over as acting president during her trial.
