Hi, I want to know the meaning of "through", "throughout" and "go through".

Hello Suri, Let me begin by talking about "through" and "throughout".

Both can be used as prepositions¹ or adverbs.

两者都可以用作介词或副词。 

Today, I will explain their uses as prepositions.

Both words can relate to space or time, depending on how they are used.

这两个词都与空间或时间有关，这取决于它们如何使用。 

I will talk about space first.

我先谈谈空间。 

"Through" means moving from one side, or end, to another side, or end of something.

“Through”意味着从某物的一边或末端移动到另一边或末端。 

For example, you can say, "The train went through the tunnel."

例如，你可以说，“火车穿过了隧道”。 

That means it went in one side of the tunnel and out the other side.

这意味着它从隧道的一边进去，从另一边出去。 

"Through" can also mean within a place or within a piece of land, air, or something else.

“Through”还可以指在一个地方、一块土地、空气或其他东西内。 

For example, you can say, "I walked through the park."

例如，你可以说，“我穿过公园。” 

That means you walked within the park.

"Throughout" means in every part of a place or thing.

“Throughout”指一个地方或事物的每一个部分。 

You can say, "There were pretty flowers throughout the park."

你可以说，“公园里到处都是漂亮的花。” 

That means every part of the park has pretty flowers.

这意味着公园的每个地方都有漂亮的花朵。 

You can also say, "People throughout the United States have wonderful accents."

你也可以说，“美国各地的人都有很棒的口音。” 

An easy way to think of the difference between "through" and "throughout" is this:

一个简单的方法来区分“through”和“throughout”： 

"Through" generally suggests motion²; "throughout" generally describes a place or location.

“through”通常表示动作； “throughout”一般描述一个地方或位置。 

Now, lets think about how these words relate to time.

现在，让我们来思考一下这些词是如何与时间联系在一起的。 

"Through" suggests moving toward³ the completion or end of something.

“Through”表示接近完成或结束某事。 

For example, "The sale goes through the end of June" means the sale will continue or last until the end of June.

例如，“The sale goes through the end of June”意味着促销将继续或持续到六月底。 

"Throughout" means during an entire situation or period of time.

“Throughout”是指在整个情况或一段时间内。 

For example, "We heard birds singing throughout the day" means we heard them all day long.

例如，“We heard birds singing throughout the day”意思是我们整天都听到鸟儿们唱歌。 

And finally, we turn to the term "go through."

最后，我们说一下词组“go through”。 

"Go through" is a phrasal verb with several meanings.

“Go through”是一个动词短语，有多个含义。 

Yet most are not related⁴ to the meanings of "through" and "throughout."

然而，大多数与“through”和“throughout”的含义无关。 

But there is one meaning that relates in a small way — to examine something carefully.

但有一个含义与之有微小的关联——仔细地检查某件事。 

I can say, "I went through all of the papers and found what I was looking for."

This meaning of "go through" suggests moving "through" something: in this case, the papers.
