HOST:
(Start at 58')Dennis Tito is a sixty-year-old American who lives in Los Angeles, California. He is in Russia now training for a most unusual trip into space.
ANNCR:
Dennis Tito paid the Russian government twenty-million dollars for the chance to travel in a Soyez space (1)craft to the new International Space Station. His space flight will be launched2 on April thirtieth.
Mister3 Tito says he has been interested in space travel since he was seventeen years old. That was when the former Soviet4 Union launched the first(2) satellite, (3)Sputnik. This interest led him to become a(4) rocket scientist. He worked for the United States Jet5 Propulsion (5)Laboratory in California. He left that job after a few years to start an (6)investment6 business.
Today, Dennis Tito's company is among the nation's largest investment businesses. Reports say he is worth about two-hundred-million dollars. So he can easily pay twenty-million dollars for a trip into space.
Mister Tito says he asked Russian space (7)officials to take him because he knew they needed money to keep their space program (8)alive. The first agreement was for him to visit the Mir space station. But Mir is old, and has experienced7 many problems. It will be taken out of (9)orbit next month, and will crash into the sea. Russian space officials decided8 to send Mister Tito to the International Space Station(10) instead.
This is not the first time the Russian space program has earned needed money by selling seats on its (11)spacecraft. A Japanese (12)television reporter flew on Mir for a price of twelve-million dollars. And the American space agency9 NASA paid four-hundred-million dollars to send several American (13)astronauts to Mir.
Mister Tito is now living and working at Russia's Star City training area to prepare for his ten-day trip. Why does he want to go into space? Mister Tito says he has been on Earth for sixty years and he now wants to take a look at the planet10 from space.

TITLE=AMERICAN MOSAIC #805 - Foreign Student Series: Part 22, Johnson & Wales University
BYLINE=Nancy Steinbach
HOST:
We continue our series for foreign students who want to study at American universities. Shirley Griffith tells about a(14) university that has been called one of the most unusual in the United States.
ANNCR:
It is Johnson and Wales University. Its main center is in (15)Providence11, Rhode Island. Gertrude Johnson and May Wales began it as a business school in Nineteen-Fourteen. Now, its students also study food service management, travel services, hotel management, marketing12 and other subjects.
Many of Johnson and Wales' students study business subjects from the time they enter the university. They also get work experience as part of their education. Professors (16)supervise second-year students as they work in businesses that are owned by the university. These include farms, stores and hotels.
More than thirteen-thousand students attend Johnson and Wales University. More than one-thousand students are from outside the United States. They come from ninety-two countries around the world. University officials say most are studying international travel and(17) recreation services.
Johnson and Wales University has an office in (18)Istanbul, Turkey that tells people about the school. Workers in the office meet with students. They travel to schools all over the world and talk about the university. They help students with their (19)applications and other paper work. And they provide information about how to get (20)financial aid.
International students pay about twenty-five-thousand dollars a year to attend Johnson and Wales University in Providence. The university's International Center helps new students find places to live and provides many other needed services. The university's English Language Center offers classes that teach English as a second language.
You can use a computer to get more information about Johnson and Wales University. The address is www.jwu.edu. Or you can write to International Admissions13, Johnson and Wales University, Eight Abbott Park Place, Providence, Rhode Island, zero-two-nine-zero-three, U-S-A.

TITLE=AMERICAN MOSAIC #805 - Country Music Stars

HOST:
Our VOA listener question this week comes in an e-mail from the Middle East. Milud Sultan Al-Omrany asks about famous singers in the history of country music.
A singer named Jimmie Rodgers is known as the "Father of Country Music." He was one of the first people elected to the Country Music Hall Of Fame. Some experts say country music started with his first recording14 in Nineteen-Twenty-Seven. The next year, his song "Blue Yodel" sold more than one-million records.
((CUT 1: BLUE YODEL))
Another singer important in the history of country music was Hank Williams. He was only thirty years old when he died in Nineteen-Fifty-Three. It seemed that almost every song he recorded became a hit. One of his biggest was "Your Cheatin' Heart."
((CUT 2: YOUR CHEATIN' HEART))
One of the most important women in country music history was Patsy Cline. She was a major (21)influence on country singers like Loretta Lynn and Reba McIntyre. Patsy Cline was killed in a plane crash in Nineteen-Sixty-Three. We leave you now with the song that many people say was Patsy Cline's best recording,"Crazy."
