The United States has warned it is planning to make further arrests as its criminal investigation1 into Fifa deepens.
“We do anticipate bringing additional charges against individuals and entities,” said Loretta Lynch, the US attorney-general, while declining to outline a timetable.
Football’s governing body was shaken by a series of dawn raids in Zurich ahead of the annual Fifa congress in May.
Ms Lynch said her investigation had expanded since then. “Thirteen of the 14 defendants2 we charged have been arrested. Three are in the US and have been arraigned3 in a court in Brooklyn. Ten others are in Switzerland and three other countries,” she said.
Ms Lynch declined to comment on whether Sepp Blatter, the current president of Fifa, is a target.
As a Swiss, Mr Blatter cannot be extradited from Switzerland. While Mr Blatter has insisted that he is “clean” and “an honest man”, he has also said he will not “risk” travelling to any countries with an extradition4 treaty with the US while the investigation continues.
Asked if she would try to arrest him if he stepped outside his homeland, Ms Lynch said: “I’m not going to comment on individuals who will be subject of the next round of arrests so I cannot give you information about Mr Blatter’s travel plans.”
Meanwhile, Ms Lynch’s Swiss counterpart Michael Lauber, said that a separate investigation into possible corruption5 during the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup had led officials to search some Swiss houses and confiscate6 other properties in the Swiss Alps.
Mr Lauber said his investigation was “not yet at the half-time stage” and that it was extremely “time-consuming”.
He added that he had received a document last Sunday showing Mr Blatter’s signature on a 2005 contract to sell a set of television rights to the 2010 and 2014 World Cups to the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) for $600,000. Jack7 Warner, the former head of the CFU, then sold the rights on for an estimated $18m to $20m.
