China should adapt to new norm of growth: Xi
Chinese President Xi Jinping says the country should adapt to new norm for its economic growth and be cool-minded amid slowdown in the world's second-largest economy.
Xi Jinping made the remark during his inspection1 tour to central China's Henan Province over the past two days.
He said China is still in a significant period of strategic opportunity. The country must boost its confidence, adapt to the new normal condition based on the characteristics of China's economic growth in the current phase and stay cool-minded.
The president said China should also attach great significance to preventing diversified2 risks for its economy and take timely countermeasures to reduce potential negative effects.
Chinese, Kenyan leaders vow3 to promote ties, cooperation
Chinese Premier4 Li Keqiang and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta have agreed in Nairobi to bring bilateral5 ties to a higher level.
Li Keqiang said during talks with Kenyatta that China is willing to cooperate with Kenya to strengthen high-level exchanges and political mutual6 trust, support each other on issues of core interests and major concerns, so as to promote bilateral relations to a higher level.
The premier hoped the two sides can make full use of the China-Kenya economic and trade joint7 commission mechanism8, while calling for strengthened planning, guidance and coordination9 in the two-way pragmatic cooperation, and further collaboration10 in such areas as trade, investment, finance and energy.
South China Sea issue not problem between China, ASEAN, says FM spokeswoman
Chinese Foreign Ministry11 spokeswoman Hua Chunying says the South China Sea issue is not a problem between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Hua Chunying said this after ASEAN foreign ministers issued a statement in Myanmar on Saturday, in which they expressed "serious concerns" over the ongoing12 developments in the South China Sea and called for a peaceful resolution.
She said the Chinese side is always opposed to one or two countries' attempts to use the South Sea issue to harm the overall friendship and cooperation between China and the ASEAN.
China stands ready to work together with the ASEAN to continue implementing13 the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) comprehensively and effectively to safeguard peace and stability in the region.
Police chief stresses security for Shanghai summit
China's Minister of Public Security Guo Shengkun has urged full efforts to ensure security for the Fourth Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) to be held in shanghai on May 20 and 21.
Guo Shengkun made the remarks Saturday after he watched a combat drill participated by Shanghai police, who will shoulder the security work for the event.
He said the current anti-terrorism situation is grave and complicated, and the security preparation for CICA has entered the final stage.
The minister urged the police to strengthen real combat exercises and intensify14 armed patrol.
Dozens injured in clash over incinerator plan in China
At least 10 protestors and 29 policemen were injured as they clashed at a rally Saturday against a plan to build a waste incinerator in east China's Hangzhou city, capital of Zhejiang Province.
The site of the incinerator plant was made public in April. Residents near the site fear that it will be harmful to their health and add to pollution.
Lost radioactive source in E China city retrieved15
A lost radioactive source in east China's Nanjing City has been found. No casualties have been reported.
A Tianjin engineering company reported the loss of the iridium-192 radioactive source on Wednesday while conducting an inspection operation in a yard of Sinopec at the Puliu north street.
An emergency response plan was soon initiated16 by the city government.The search area was later narrowed to two square meters.
The source was found Saturday afternoon and put back into a lead-shielded pot.
So far, no casualties by exposure to the radioactive source have been reported.
Ministry vows17 regulation of online lottery18 sales
China's Ministry of Finance has reiterated19 tough regulation of Internet lottery sales, as explosive growth in past years has raised concerns about sellers' qualifications.
A spokesman of the finance ministry says all lottery sales should be strictly20 regulated to prevent addiction21 to lottery purchases.
The spokesman acknowledges it is more difficult to regulate online lottery sales.
He says welfare or sports lottery sales agencies should not sell lottery tickets online without the approval of the finance ministry.
China's bank card consumer confidence picks up
Chinese consumer confidence rebounded22 month on month in April for a second straight month, according to a latest index.
The Bankcard Consumer Confidence Index edged up 0.5 points from March to 85 points last month.
A higher reading in the index shows a boost in consumers' desire to spend.
A report released along with the index forecast that consumer confidence may continue to rise on a favorable economic outlook after the government took pro-growth measures including tax cuts for small and micro-sized enterprises, as well as accelerating railway construction in central and western China.
