The Federal Government has won praise for its handling of the economy. The Reserve Bank Governor Glenn Stevens says stimulus¹ measures have helped keep Australia out of a recession and he’s rejected calls to wind back the stimulus, saying the level of debt is manageable. Meanwhile, the opposition² leader Malcolm Turnbull is under increasing pressure about an emissions³ trading scheme. National Senator Ron Boswell has disputed Mr. Turnbull's assertion that an ETS wasn't an election promise.

Officials in the Philippines say rescuers are struggling to cope with floods that have killed at least 140 people, almost half a million have been displaced. The Philippines has called for international aid to help with the crisis.

Film director Roman Polanski is said to fight any attempt to extradite him to the US. Polanski is being detained in Zurich for a sex crime dating back 30 years.

Honduras's de facto government has shut down two local media stations loyal to the ousted⁴ president. Manuel Zelaya returned to Honduras last week, he was deposed⁵ in a coup⁶ three months ago.

In Queensland, firefighters say bushfires burning across the state are now under control. Firefighters worked overnight to contain fires near Rockhampton and the state’s south.
