The Oceanic Viking standoff is over but that isn't stopping the political debate about asylum¹ seekers. The remaining 56 Sri Lankans arrived at an Indonesian detention² center overnight. The Opposition³ says the deal to fast-track their processing has set a dangerous precedent⁴ which will encourage people smugglers.

"Has the Prime Minister sought advice on how many extra boat arrivals will result from this very public weakening of Australia's border protection policies?"

The Government says the Coalition⁵ now all fear around no solution.

"If he has something further to add, stand to his feat⁶ and provide that evidence now."

A total fire ban is in place today for most parts of South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT. In South Australia, the warning of catastrophic fire danger remains⁷ in place for the west coast and the eastern Eyre Peninsula.

The U.S. president has acknowledged for the first time that he would not meet his January deadline to shut down Guantanamo Bay. Barack Obama says he is not disappointed and still hopes to close Guantanamo Bay next year.

And U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is among hundreds of foreign dignitaries who've arrived in the Afghan capital, Kabul, for the inauguration⁸ of the President Hamid Karzai.
