Planes carrying aid workers and supplies are facing major delays trying to get into Haiti. Haiti’s government has stopped all civilian1 flights into Port-au-Prince because there’s no room on the ground for more planes and not enough jet fuel for planes to leave. Aid workers say the next 24 hours will be critical to finding survivors2 of the earthquake and stopping the spread of the disease. Haiti’s Red Cross says up to 50,000 people are believed to have died and three million others are either injured or homeless.
The Greens have thrown their support behind Tony Abbott’s environmental initiatives. During a speech in Sydney overnight, the Opposition3 Leader said he wants to spend 750 million dollars for recruiting environmental workers and is pushing for a referendum on referring state powers to the Commonwealth4 over the Murray-Darling Basin.
