Prime Minister Julia Gillard is expected to take a tougher approach to border protection when she announces her policy on asylum¹ seekers this week. Cabinet will today discuss the future of Sri Lankan asylum seekers who've been left in limbo² since May. The Government suspended processing of

their refugee claims but the measure expires on Thursday.

A Melbourne man could face 12 years in a Bali jail after he was caught using cocaine³. Indonesian police said Angus McCaskill was found carrying several packets of cocaine in his wallet. He told reporters he made a silly mistake and he took the cocaine after getting drunk watching the soccer World Cup.

An Australian AIDS expert says the world is facing a rolling holocaust⁴ because millions of sufferers are denied life-saving treatment. Bill Bowtell who helped draft Australia's policy on AIDS, says the global financial crisis has slowed an international response to the pandemic.

The owners and captain of a ship that spilled 270,000 litres of oil off Queensland will face court today. The Pacific Adventurer captain and his employer, Swire Shipping⁵, are charged with disposing of oil in coastal⁶ waters and failing to notify authorities. The spill caused a major clean-up of Queensland beaches in 2009.
