The latest report card for Australian school students shows no improvement in literacy and numeracy over the last 12 months, despite a boost in government funding for education. The National Curriculum Authority says it's too early to determine why the plateau has occurred. The writing results for years 7 and 9, have also decreased in the past five years. Primary students have fared better, with students in years three and five making gains in a range of areas including reading and numeracy.

Police have released footage of a failed robbery in Sydney, as they try to track down two of the men behind that crime. Detectives say three men armed with rifles and a pistol approached a cash-in-transit van and threatened the guard back in March 2013. Two men have been charged over that incident.

Independent Senator Nick Xenophon says Australia's big banks should be required to explain their decisions if they don't pass on interest rate cuts in full. The RBA cut the official interest rate to 1.5 per cent yesterday, but the banks will pass on just half of that to mortgage customers.
