China's consumer price index rose to 1.4 percent in June compared to the same month a year ago, data from the National Bureau of Statistics show, and the price of pork rose 7 percent.

The CPI has been rising faster than expected because pork prices have been rising, said Zhang Yiping, an analyst¹ from China Merchants Securities. Pork prices play a key role in CPI data, he said, and rising prices of the meat will continue to push up the CPI for the rest of the year.

An increase this large could push the CPI up 1 percentage point, said Yu Pingkang, the chief economist³ of Huatai Securities. Rising pork prices will account for 1.4 percentage points of the CPI figure for the year, the brokerage said.
