Today a story of crime and punishment where you'd least expect: the elderly care industry.

Last December, a 45-year-old caregiver named He Tiandai was put on trial in Guangzhou for having killed He Yanzhu, a 70-year-old woman she was being paid to take care of.

去年12月，45岁保姆何天带因故意杀害何艳珠在广州法院受审，70岁的何艳珠为何天带雇主。

He Tiandai admitted to the murder, saying she had poisoned the old woman's soup with sleeping pills and pesticide¹, injected her body with it, and strangled her with a rope.

何天带对罪行供认不讳，称她在汤中加入安眠药和敌敌畏，并将毒药注射其体内，并用脖子勒死死者。

He Yanzhu's daughter-in-law had come to a caregiver's agency looking for someone to take of her mother-in-law who suffered from osteoporosis.

何艳珠儿媳曾通过家政服务找寻保姆，帮忙照顾患有骨质疏松的何老太。

The family could only offer 2,500 yuan, about a 1,000 lower than the going-rate.

他们只能支付2500元，比现行市场价格低了约1000元。

Amongst a crowd of caregivers that recoiled² at the low pay, He Tiandai stepped forward to take the offer.

许多保姆“望而却步”，但何天带却接受了这份工作。

But He Tiandai had one unusual condition: should her patient die before her salary was due, she would still receive full payment.

但何有一个特殊要求：如果只做几天老人就去世，那也要支付一个月工资。

Despite being outraged³, the family acceded⁴.

雇主无奈般同意。

Just three days into the job, the caregiver proceeded to take her patient's life early.

仅仅三天以后，何老太惨遭厄运。

But the 70-year-old was not the only victim.

但何老太却不是第一位受害者。

Prior to this, He Tiandai had hopped⁵ from job to job, trying to kill nine other elderly people, succeeding in seven cases.

何天带曾多次更换工作，曾企图杀害9名老人，并成功杀害7人。

The motif⁶ was none other than the fact that she wanted her salary sooner.

When asked by a prosecutor⁷ to apologize to the victim's relatives, He Tiandai refused and said, "I killed people. I will pay with my life".

How does one begin to explain such an incident?

Caregivers are linked up with elderly clients typically through private agencies, which are easily found in many of the major cities.

The agency that recommended He Tiandai, only had her phone number and a copy of her ID card.

It is all the more worrying because growing demand for caregivers means increasing number of people are taking up these jobs without qualification.

In February last year, the police in Guangzhou detained another woman named Chen Yuping, again, on suspicion that she had killed at least six of her elderly patients for early payments.
