Dialogue 6  
EXPECTING A PHONE CALL

Laurance-Was i hat the telephone ringing?
Soony- I didn't hear anything.
Laurance-I thought I heard it ring two or three times.
Soony- Sometimes when the windows are open, you can
hear the neighbors' phone.
Laurance-Well, I'm expecting an important phone call, and
I don't want to miss it.
Soony- Is it anything I should know about?
Laurance-Not really. It has something to do with work and
doesn't really affect¹ us here at home.
Soony- Well, why don't you go ahead² and do what you wanted
to do outside. I'll call you if the phone rings for you.
Laurance-Thanks. I think I will. I've been waiting so long
now I'm getting nervous. I need to relax outdoors³.

注解:
1. Not really.= It is not really anything you should know about.
2. have something to do with work:与工作有关.这是个常用句型.
have 动词之后可用nothing,something,anything也可用a lot,agreat deal,
little等词替换.
3. waiting so long now(that)I'm getting nervous:口语中so...that结构
中的that常省略.

1 affect   

vt. 影响, 感动, 假装, 模仿, 爱好, 倾向于;n. 自觉感情;【联想记忆】af(to) + fect(make) → 对...加以推动 → 影响

参考例句：

• A bad home environment can affect a child's healthy growth.不良的家庭环境能影响儿童的健康成长。
• This article will affect my thinking.这篇文章将会影响我的思想。

2 ahead   

adv.在前，向前，提前，在前面

参考例句：

• We have to go ahead to find a garage.我们得到前边找个修车厂。
• Youth looks ahead and age backward.青年人向前看，老年人向后看。

3 outdoors   

adv.在户外，在野外

参考例句：

• I like to practice yoga outdoors.我喜欢在户外练习瑜伽。
• The boys are playing outdoors.男孩们在户外玩。
