R: At the Golden Globes last night. Did you watch? The thank-yous or they were tearful and heartfelt. But who should be thanking their stylists? Clinton Kelly author of “Oh, No, She Didn't” and style expert Mary Alice Stephenson are here to talk about the “best” and the “not-so-much” there on the red carpet. Both look great. Hello.
C: Nice to meet you.
R: I love that title. Oh, no, she didn’t.
C: Oh, no, she didn’t. Do with a little snap.
R: I know that. Mary Alice, we did see some trends, didn’t we?
M: We sure did. There was a return to the 80s. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, Robin1. There was Crystal Carrington, Ella Dynasty on the red carpet last night, Angelina Jolie being in her green Versace.
C: She looked amazing, I thought.
M: She did look stunning2, but look at the shoulders, look what that is.
R: Shoulder pads?
C: Yeah.
M: Yes. Big shoulders, you know, very clean, really classic, she’s got Swarovski crystals all over that neck line, minimal3 jewelry4, modern looking but a flash back, a little bit of flash back.
C: A flashback to the 80s, but also sort of to the 40s. It’s very emerald city, Wizard of Oz, right? She’s like a queen of emerald city there. Yeah, I thought she looks stunning.
R: And what else did you see, Clinton?
C: We saw also a lot of…ur, who’s our next?
M: Well, Anne Hathaway.
C: Yeah, Anne Hathaway. Oh, my god. She’s like one of my top three favorites.
M: Both Clinton and I loved Ann.
R: Oh, there, she’s also wearing shoulder pads.
M: She’s wearing Armani. Armani Privé, Roger Vivier bag. What we’re seeing is, is this gorgeous flowing hair with these the over-the-top gowns. And that kind of modernized5 is that makes her look sexy, young and fresh, don't you think, Clinton?
C: Absolutely, and it’s completely backless practically, so it dips all the way down to her touche, which is really sexy. She looks super statuesque and really sort of settle herself up as a movie star, you know, real star.
M: And last time I talked to Rachel Zoe on the phone, her stylist, and Ann actually had two choices up to the last minute, one a little bit crazier over the top, and she went with this old Hollywood meets new, glamorous6, sexy, work for her.
R: And it really worked for her body.
C: Absolutely
R: And sometimes
C: That doesn’t work so well for some people.
R: Yeah.
C: I mean, it’s tricky7 to dress for your body type. Sometimes things that are on the runway don’t necessarily transit8 to real women, and some stars have more curves than the average model. January Jones, for example. A beautiful woman, I mean she is a stunning woman, however…
R: And it’s a beautiful dress.
C: It’s a beautiful dress, but look at the way the dress is almost fighting her natural curves. She almost don’t know where to look, her chest looked sort of squished together. And so that’s an example in my opinion that somebody who didn’t really dress for their body type.
M: Yeah, January saw this on the runway. It wasn’t a different color for spring and she wanted this in red. It also, to me, you don’t match the lip color with the dress color. And you know when she’s so stunningly9 sexy like that,it’s just a little bit too much over the top. So she wasn’t our favorite, you can tell.
R: So who did dress for their body type?
C: Well, a woman who is curvy who did very well, Sofia Vergara.
M: Sofia Vergara. And she’s wearing Vera Wang, I love how modern and sexy she looks. This dress fits her like a glove. We love the long flowing hair, the jewelry. It was, you know, absolutely stunning and flattering.
M: She feels good, you can, you can see that on her face.
C: Yeah, sometimes women who’re curvy can't look too sexy if they show too much skin. So she’s just showing enough skin upon tops, we get the décolletage. Showing how narrow her waist is with that black belt, and then the great curve on the hip10, she looked amazing.
M: And she was twittering all night and her fittings about how she couldn’t find a dress that fit her curves. So she did great with Vera Wang.
R: Ah, such a problem. I couldn’t find a dress that fit the curves…
M: Oh, my God.
R: But the colors that we saw also was like kinda, it’s pinkish colors and things like that.
C:Lots of pink.
M: Lots of pink on the red carpet. A big trend, blush. Pink we saw Natalie Portman, we saw
Lea Michele, Claire Danes.
C: Claire Danes, and my personal favorite.
M: We love Claire Danes.
C: I love Claire Danes.
R: I love it. That was my favorite dress.
C: Love the dress.
M: She looks so modern and elegant in Calvin Klein. This is a neon silk halter dress. She’s wearing Gold 70s inspired Cuffing11 Franklinton, so classic, so elegant. And then Lea Michele, she really, I mean last year she got it wrong in that black Oscar de la Renta.
C: This year spot on, right?
M: This year spot on. This is also Oscar de la Renta, this is how she should look, young, fresh, colorful, fascinating.
C: Age appropriate. Flirting12.
R: Age appropriate. We also saw a lot of emerald green.
C: A lot of emerald green, so we talked about Angelina Jolie before, but there’s a whole bunch of other stars that did emerald green. It was like emerald city has just coming aloft off the runway.
M: Yeah, Catherine Zeta-Jones is in emerald green, and Monique Lhuillier called me last night, she did dress Catherine. Catherine wanted to look regal and elegant, and she, she just I think looks stunning.
C: I think she looks stunning, I would say that I thought this dress was kind of a lot, you know, a lot of dress. I mean, she looks stunning like everybody else.
M: She can pull it off. If anyone who could, it's Catherine, Mila Kunis looks greatness in Vera Wang. And also Elisabeth Moss13 in Donna Karan, fitted, gorgeous, simple. I think what’s interesting is what we didn’t see on the red carpet. We didn’t see a lot of old-fashioned jewelry. We didn’t see a lot of hair-dos. It was really classic, sexy and modern looking.
R: Well, I can say the same about the two of you. Thank you, both. You can see many more red carpet photos from your favorite stars on our website.
