 Todd: OK, Sophie, we're going to talk about high school. What was high school like?

Sophie: It was great. Lots of fun. Lots of friends. Learned¹ quite a bit at school.

Todd: So, what did you study in high school?

Sophie: I studied mainly sciences actually.

Todd: Oh, really!

Sophie: Biology.

Todd: Did you study science in college?

Sophie: Yes! Oh, No! I didn't. I went on to do a bachelor² of technology.

Todd: Oh, really. Well, that's kind of similar.

Sophie: Kind of similar. Related³.

Todd: OK, what did you do in high school? Any clubs or anything?

Sophie: Yeah, I did rowing for the school. I played basketball, played tennis, was on the swimming team.

Todd: Wow, you're quite athletic⁴. What sport did you like the most?

Sophie: Rowing.

Todd: Rowing. Do you still row?

Sophie: No, unfortunately not.

Todd: Really!

Sophie: Would like to.

Todd: Do you think you'll pick it up some time in the future?

Sophie: Yeah, maybe, if I'm around a lake or a river.

Todd: Yeah! Not too many lakes in Tokyo. Um, anything esle? Any other memories about high school?

Sophie: Yeah, lots of parties. It was good.

Todd: Sounds like a good time.

Sophie: Yeah!

Technology is also related to the sciences.

 

If one things is 'related to' another there is a connection between them. Notice the following:

 

I think your sickness is related to stress.

Is this research related to the presentation⁵ you're going to give?

athletic

 

I play basketball and tennis; I'm quite athletic.

 

An 'athletic' person is good at sports and physical things. Notice the following:

 

He was really athletic in high school, but now he's fat.

She has always been really athletic and healthy.

row

 

I don't row anymore, but I'd like to.

 

To 'row' means⁶ to move a boat with long pieces of wood called oars⁷.  When you are alone you row with two oars, but if you are part of a team you may use just one. Notice the following:

 

We are going to take the boat out and row around the lake for a while.

My shoulders get really tired when I row.

Do you think you'll pick it up sometime in the future?

 

If you plan to do an activity 'sometime' in the future it means that you don't know exactly when it will happen.  It is an indefinite⁹ future moment. Notice the following:

 

We plan to go to Europe sometime after the kids grow up.

Will you come visit me sometime?

Is there anything else? Do you have any other memories about high school?

 

If a person asks if we want to say 'anything else' they are asking for other interesting information or opinions. Notice the following:

 

Is there anything else you want from the store?

Do you plan to do anything else besides sit on the beach on vacation?

adj.有学问的，博学的；learn的过去式和过去分词

2 bachelor   

n.单身汉，未婚者；学士学位

• She was a bachelor woman.她是一个独立生活的未婚女子。

3 related   

adj.有关系的，有关联的，叙述的，讲述的

参考例句：

• I am not related to him in any way.我和他无任何关系。
• We spent days going through all related reference material.我们花了好多天功夫查阅所有有关的参考资料。

4 athletic   

adj.擅长运动的，强健的；活跃的，体格健壮的

参考例句：

• This area has been marked off for athletic practice.这块地方被划出来供体育训练之用。
• He is an athletic star.他是一个运动明星。

5 presentation   

n.赠与，陈述，介绍；表演，展示

参考例句：

• Last week we went to the presentation of a new play.上星期我们去观看了一场新剧的演出。
• The manner of presentation is highly important.介绍的方式很重要。

6 means   

n.方法，手段，折中点，物质财富

参考例句：

• That man used artful means to find out secrets.那人使用狡猾的手段获取机密。
• We must get it done by some means or other.我们总得想办法把它干完。

7 oars   

n.桨，橹( oar的名词复数 )；划手v.划（行）( oar的第三人称单数 )

参考例句：

• He pulled as hard as he could on the oars. 他拼命地划桨。

8 sometime   

adv.将来某一时候；改天

参考例句：

• He came sometime last month.上个月某个时候他曾经来过。
• It will happen sometime and somewhere.有朝一日这总会在什么地方发生的。

9 indefinite   

adj.不明确的，模糊的，不定的，无限的

参考例句：

• The store will be closed for an indefinite period.这家商店将无限期关闭。
• He gave me an indefinite answer.他给了我一个含糊其辞的答复。
