　　The longboat flew over the waves. A few minutes later we encountered the shark's corpse¹ again, floating. 小艇在水波上飞走。几分钟后，我们碰到浮在海上的那条鲨鱼的尸体。

　　From the black markings on the tips of its fins², I recognized the dreadful Squalus melanopterus from the seas of the East Indies, a variety in the species of sharks proper.  看到那鳍梢现出的黑颜色，我认出这条鲨鱼就是印度海中厉害怕人的黑鲨鱼，真正所谓鲨鱼的一种。

　　It was more than twenty-five feet long; its enormous mouth occupied a third of its body.  它身长二十五英尺，它的大嘴占它全长的三分之一。
