He learned to do all the proper things. He could ride a donkey in his sleep. He sat very far back and sidewise without any saddle. When he wanted the donkey to go faster, he kicked both feet very fast in the air and made a loud, whirring sound, ‘‘Errrrrr—hey!” Also he had many strange names for the donkey, of which “Son of Satan” was the most polite. He could play the darbouka, the pottery¹ drum, in many strange ways, so that it throbbed² and beat like I an imprisoned³ spirit for hours together.

He could keep his father’s shop for him, and never be cheated at all. He could argue and bargain and sputter⁴ with the best of them over a few cents, looking as though he were about to burst with rage; and then, when the bargain was I settled, he could be in an instant calm and polite.
