Bridget Moynahan wasn't making much progress. She'd set out to cull³ her shoe closet but instead found herself keeping every pair of pumps, boots and sandals she saw.

That realization⁴ sparked the idea for the Blue Bloods actress's newest project, Our Shoes, Our Selves, a collection of 40 essays by women from Padma Laksh-mi to Katie Couric on the memories associated with their favorite footwear.

"Women wrote about the heels that made them feel sexy or combat boots that had jumped out of airplanes," Moynahan says of the book, written with Amanda Benchley.

The book also launched a journey of self-reflection for Moynahan, 47, who shares a deeply personal essay in the anthology about the most vulnerable time in her life.

It was 2007, and Moynahan, then 36, was expecting a baby with her ex-boyfriend, New England Patriots⁶ quarterback Tom Brady, after he had already moved on with supermodel Gisele Bündchen.

The firestorm of controversy⁷ that ensued meant that the actress, then best known for roles in I, Robot, Coyote Ugly and Sex and the City, was suddenly a tabloid⁸ fixture⁹.

As she faced an unexpected life as a single mom to Jack¹⁰, now 11, and navigated¹¹ the relationship with Brady and Bundchen, Moynahan says the public scrutiny became too much.

"I would have cars following me and men hiding in the bushes," she says. "As a new mother you want to just protect your child. That kind of attention felt like a threat."

"I thought, That's what I need. Let me get a little bit of my 'New York' back, a little armor," says Moynahan.

Though Moynahan is open about the frustration¹⁴ of seeing her personal life publicized ("A lot of it's not true, and that's hard!" she says), she's grateful that she's been able to give her son a safe and private life, along with her husband of three years, businessman Andrew Frankel, who is also father to three boys from a previous relationship.
