Lesson 10 First Day, Huh?

George: First day, huh?

Jack¹: Yeah. I'm actually kind of nervous. I don't really know what to expect. What about you?

George: Oh, I've been with this company for years. Ever since I was around your age, I'd imagine. Now those were the days.

Jack: Wow. That's a long time with one company. I mean, I can't even imagine being² here for more than five years.

George: That's the thing with you young people these days. You're always on the move. Back in my day, people stuck with their jobs for life. Our top priority³ was to put food on the table for our families.

Jack: Yeah, well… The world is such a big place, you know? And besides, there really is only just me, so I don't have any family holding me back.

George: No family? That's too bad. A handsome young guy like yourself, especially with a good job. Surely⁴, there must be someone you care about.

Jack: Yeah, I have my girlfriend.

George: So, what's stopping you from marrying the girl?

Jack: I just like having my freedom, you know? People don't get married⁵ until they're old and ready to settle⁶ down. I mean, maybe that's what people did back in the day, but now? That's just way too old-fashioned⁷.
