Late on election Night 2016, Hirono was at home in Hawaii,

2016年大选之夜的深夜，身在夏威夷家中的庆子都还在想，

trying to decide what to say to supporters after Hillary Clinton’s surprise loss.

希拉里·克林顿意外落选，她要怎么跟她的支持者们交代。

Some of her advisers¹ urged her to take a conciliatory tone,

部分顾问敦促她采取安抚的语调，

to pledge to work with the new President-elect, to give him the benefit of the doubt.

保证与新当选的总统合作，让大家相信新总统。

That was the tack² many of her colleagues would take in the numb³ days that followed.

因为在随后麻木的日子里，她的许多同僚都会采取这种策略。

Not Hirono.

庆子拒绝了。

“I didn’t feel like making a ‘Let’s give the man a chance’ speech,” she recalls.

“His entire campaign was so negative and antithetical to everything I believe.”

For “a couple of months,” Hirono went into a self-imposed television blackout.

She couldn’t handle what she saw

as the President’s daily attacks on immigrants, women, democratic institutions and people who didn’t share his Christian⁴ faith.

“There’s not a day that goes by that there isn’t a fresh assault on the body politic,” she says,

A savvy⁵ legislator, Hirono spent 13 years in the Hawaii statehouse,

Her elevated profile helped her avoid a once expected primary challenge.

Hirono has done all this while battling Stage 4 cancer, diagnosed in May 2017.

In July, she offered an emotional plea to protect President Obama’s health care law from a Republican-led appeal.
