The merchant, feeling now certain that the dog was mad, drew a pistol from his pocket, and took aim.

商人现在确定，他的狗真是疯了。于是，他从口袋里掏出手枪向他的狗瞄准。

In a moment the poor dog lay weltering in its blood;

一瞬间，这只可怜的狗翻滚在血泊之中，

and its master, unable to bear the sight, spurred on his horse.

它的主人不忍心看到这幅场景，策马扬鞭飞奔而去。

"I am most unfortunate," said he to himself;

“我真是倒霉透了，”他自言自语道，

"I had almost rather have lost my money than my dog."

“我宁可丢钱也不想没有狗。”

Thereupon he stretched out his hand for his treasure;

这么想着，他伸出手拍了拍自己的钱袋子，

but no bag was to be found!

却发现钱袋子不见了！

In a moment, he discovered his mistake,

一瞬间，他终于明白自己犯了一个怎样的错误，

and upbraided¹ himself for disregarding the signs which his dog had made to him.

他为自己没有注意他的狗用各种方式向他发出警告而自责不已。

He turned his horse, and rode back to the place where he had stopped.

他调转马头往回赶，经过了原先停下的地方。

He saw the marks of blood as he proceeded;

他继续前行时，看见路上的一大滩血迹，

but nowhere was his dog to be seen on the road.

可是他的狗却不见了。

At last he reached the spot where he had rested, and there lay the forgotten bag,

最后，他回到之前坐下休息的那棵树下，被忘记拿走的钱袋就躺在那儿，

with the poor dog, in the agonies of death, watching beside it!

边上还有他的那只狗，到死都想着回到主人的钱袋边看好它。

When he saw his master, he showed his joy by feebly wagging his tail.

当它看见主人回来的时候，无力地摇了摇尾巴表示它的喜悦。

He tried to rise, but his strength was gone;

它想爬起来，但已经没有力气这么做了，

and after stretching out his tongue to lick the hand that was now fondling him in deep sorrow, he closed his eyes in death.

它最后舔了舔主人的手，闭上了眼睛。而它的主人此时正爱抚着这只狗，陷入了深切的悲伤之中。
