In an emotional speech at the White House, president Obama has detailed1 his plans to tighten2 gun controls. He introduced the measures including background checks by executive order, sidestepping congressional opposition3. Jon Sopel reports.
"His nickname is No-Drama Obama but not today, not on the issue of gun control. As frustration4, impatience5 and anger over the failure to act turn to roar emotion,as he spoke about the young children who died at the New Town school shooting. 'First graders, and for every family who never imagine their loved one will be taken from our lives by a bullet from a gun. Every time I think about those kids, they get me mad.' "
The proposals from the president are relatively6 modest. No class of weapons is being banned. It's about tightening7 background checks. The National Rifle Association said it would fight president Obama's measures. The gun lobby group said the proposals will not have prevented any of the mass killings9 that the president referred to in his speech. The current Lieutenant10 Governor of Texas Dan Patrick said the changes didn't amount to much.
It's political posturing11 which will have no impact on reducing crime and it will probably not stand up to a challenge in the courts. And lastly I believe Ted8 Cruz or any other Republicans who becomes president will repeal12 those orders.
