　　与cross the line 类似，该短语也可能源于最初的球类运动或拳击运动，在比赛时以界定线为标准。

　　5.put something on the line/lay something on the line 冒险为之;实话实说

　　试想一下在掷双骰子赌博中的边线押注，这一行为极具冒险意味，此短语可能正是源于此处，意为冒险做某事。

　　I'm going to put it on the line for you. You must work harder if you want to get an A.

　　我实话对你说，如果你想取得A的成绩，就必须再努力一些。

　　He had put his career on the line and I wasn’t prepared to be an onlooker.
