 　　India’s lower house of parliament has passed a much awaited anti-rape¹ law. It comes after a huge public outcry over the treatment of women in the country, triggered by the rape and murder of a student in New Delhi.

　　The "Criminal Laws Bill" includes stringent² punishments for rape and other sexual crimes. Rapists will be given up to 20 years in prison, with the possibility of death sentences in extreme cases.

　　Other crimes will also have statutory punishments including acid attacks, human trafficking, stalking and voyeurism³. The bill also increases the age of sexual consent for girls from 16 to 18 years.
