The United States is committed to a strategy of a free and open Indo- Pacific region, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, is central to that strategy.

Security in the region has been a major issue discussed at the meetings, he said. And much of this conversation revolves² around the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or North Korea, and its efforts to build weapons of mass destruction.
