Lost civilizations

失落的文明

Day 1, 15th July

I feel lucky to have won a place on this trip.

能够赢得这次旅行的一个名额，我感到很幸运。

We are in Italy now, and tomorrow we are visiting Pompeii.

我们现在到了意大利，明天将参观庞贝。

Next week we are flying to China, and going to Loulan, which is known as China's Pompeii in the desert.

下周我们就飞往中国，前去楼兰--众所周知的沙漠中的中国庞贝。

Both Pompeii and Loulan became lost civilizations long ago.

庞贝和楼兰很久以前均已成为失落的文明。

Day 2, 16th July

This morning we attended a lecture about Pompeii.

今天上午我们听了一个关于庞贝的讲座。

The city was founded in the 8th century BC.

该城是公元前8世纪建成的。

In 89 BC, the Romans took over Pompeii. It then became a rich and busy city.

公元前89年，罗马人占领了庞贝。此后，庞贝成了一个富庶忙碌的城市。

Near the city was a volcano¹.

离该城不远处有一座火山。

On 24th August AD 79, the volcano erupted and lava², ash and rocks poured out of it onto the surrounding countryside.

公元79年8月24日，该火山突然爆发，熔岩、火山灰和岩石从火山日喷射到周边的乡村。

It continued to erupt for the next two days. Many people were buried alive, and so was the city. How unfortunate!

接下来的两天时间里，火山持续不停地喷发。很多人都被活埋了，整座城市也被掩埋了。真可悲！
