 The Reserve Bank has left interest rate on hold at 2.5 percent, the level that's been at for the last ten months. The bank's board repeated that a period of stability in interest rate is likely with rates at the right level to foster sustainable growth. The Australian dollar has hold above 90 U.S. cents over the past couple of months despite a steep drop in iron ore prices. The board took note this normally, saying the dollar remains¹ historically high.

 

The Australians have continued to spend at the shops with official figures showing retail² sales have risen for the 12th month in a row. The All Euro Statistics show....figures show retail sales rose by a fifth of a percent in April after a rise of half of that margin³ in the month before. Saleing on the Australian sharemarket gained momentum⁴ in the late... late in the session. And the market has closed sharply lower. The All Ordinaries Index shed 39 points or 7 percent. The ASX 200 Index marched that fall. 

 

To the movers. The Ten Network was among the worst performer by the close, down five percent. Rare earth miner Lynas was among the best, up ten percent. David Jones shed 1.5 percent and closing rat Country Road bucked⁵ the trend.
