 I preheat it because I want "to bake the bread and keep the chicken hot until my wife gets home." 我预先加热它，因为我想“烤面包和保持鸡肉的热度，直到我妻子回家”。

To bake, "bake," is to cook something, usually in an oven¹. 烘烤（bake）是在做某物，一般是在烤箱里。

So, I open the oven door, I put in the bread, I put in the chicken, and then I close the door. 因此，我打开烤箱门，把面包和鸡肉放了进去，然后关上烤箱门。

My wife is going to be home late so I want to keep the chicken hot — I want to make sure that it stays hot. 我妻子要晚点回家，所以我要保持鸡肉的热度——我要确保它不变凉。

"I put some water in a pan²," a pan is what you use to cook something in. “我在平底锅内倒了一些水”，平底锅是你用来烹饪食物的锅具。

So, "I put some water in a pan and I turn the burner on high." 因此，“我在平底锅内倒了一些水并调高炉灶的温度。”

The burner, "burner," is on top of what we would call your stove, "stove." 炉灶（burner），在火炉（stove）的上面。

Your burners are for cooking food, where you have the heat comes from the bottom and you put the pan on top of the heat. 炉灶是用来烹调食物的，它的热量来自底部，你把平底锅放在火上。

So, if you are going to boil some water — make the water hot,  因此，如果你要煮一些水——让水变热，

you would put it in a pan and then put it on top of a burner, and the burner is part of your stove. 你会把它倒进平底锅里，然后把锅放在炉灶上，炉灶是火炉的一部分。

Usually, stoves and ovens³ are one machine, one — in one single piece in many American kitchens. 通常，火炉和烤箱是一台机器，一台——很多美国人的厨房里它们在同一台机器里。
