And the traces of red pigment¹ are a useful reminder²

that most Greek sculpture was richly, even gaudily³, painted.

And she wears that smile -

that sign of life so common in early Greek sculpture.

What I like about her so much

is the way that she engages us as viewers.

She's looking straight ahead

and she's challenging us to look back at her.

She's got a flower in her hand -

it's not quite clear whether it's for her

or she's about to give it to us.

And in the inscription⁴, she actually almost speaks to us.

It says that it is the tomb sculpture of Phrasikleia

上面说这是佛雷斯科莱墓中的雕像

and then, as if in her own voice, it says,

然后就好像是她自己开口说道

"And I shall always be called a maiden⁵"

"我应该一直被称作少女"

"because I got that name from the gods, instead of marriage."

"因为是神给了我这个名字 而不是婚姻"

That is, she died before her wedding day.

也就是说 她死于婚礼之前

But what's great about it is the encounter it sets up,

但最棒的还是它制造的这种邂逅

and it's the encounter that, if we try hard,

这种邂逅 只要我们尽力去了解

I think we can still enjoy.

就会乐在其中
