 　　The Camel² and the Pig 骆驼和猪

　　Once a camel and a pig were talking to each other. 从前有一只骆驼和一头猪说话。

　　The camel was³ very proud⁴ because he was tall.  骆驼非常骄傲，因为它很高。

　　"Just look at me," he said⁵. "See how tall I am. Don't you wish you were tall like me?" 它说：“看看我，知道我多高了吧。你想和我一般高吗？”

　　"Oh, no," said the pig. "I think it is much better to be short like me." “噢，不想。”猪说：“我认为像我这样矮更好。”

　　"Both of us can't be right," said the camel. "But if I am not right, I will give up my hump." “我们两个不可能都对，”骆驼说，“但如果我不对，我就会丢弃驼峰。”

　　"And I will give up my snout if I am not right," said the pig. “如果我不对，我会丢弃鼻子。”猪说。

　　"Then come with me," said the camel. "I will show you that I am right." “那随我来吧，”骆驼说，“我会告诉我是对的。”

　　So the tall camel and the short pig went down the road together. 因此高骆驼和矮猪一起上路了。

　　Soon they came¹ to a garden. Around this garden was a high brick⁶ wall. 不久，它们到了一个花园。花园周围是高高的砖墙。

　　There was no door in the wall. But the camel was so tall that he could⁷ see right over the top of the wall.  墙上没有门。但骆驼很高，能越过墙顶看到里面。

　　He could see the fine ripe⁸ fruit in the garden. 它看到了花园里美味的熟果。

　　The camel stuck⁹ his head over the wall and ate¹⁰ all the fruit he wanted. 骆驼把头靠在墙上，吃了所有它想吃的果子。

　　The poor pig was so short that he could not reach¹¹ over the wall.  可怜的猪太矮了，无法越过墙去。

　　He could not get inside¹² the garden, because there was no door. So he got¹³ no fruit. 又因为没门进不到花园里。所以它吃不到水果。

　　"Ha, ha!" laughed the camel. "Now, isn't it better to be tall like me than to be short like you?" 骆驼笑道：“哈哈！现在，像我一般高是不是比你这样矮的好？”

　　The pig didn't say a word. They went on a little farther¹⁵ and came to another garden. 猪没有说话。它们又往前走了一点儿，来到了另一个花园。

　　The wall around this garden was so high that even¹⁶ the camel could not reach over it. 这个花园周围的墙非常高，以至于骆驼也够不到了。

　　There was a small door in this wall. The pig pushed¹⁷ the door open with his snout and went in. 墙上有一个小门。猪用鼻子推开门进去了。

　　This garden was full of ripe fruit, too, and the pig ate all he wanted. 这个花园里也都是成熟的水果，猪吃了它想吃的所有水果。

　　But the poor camel was so tall that he could not get through the door, and so he did¹⁴ not get any of the fruit. 但可怜的骆驼太高了，进不到门里，所以吃不到任何水果。

　　"Ha, ha, ha!" laughed the pig. "Now, isn't it better to be short like me than to be tall like you?" “哈哈哈！”猪笑道。“现在，是不是我这么矮的比你这么高的好？”

　　The camel didn't say anything for a long time.  骆驼很久没说话。

　　At last he said, "Sometimes it's better to be small. Sometimes it's better to be tall." 最后它说：“有时矮点儿好。有时高点儿好。”

　　So the camel kept his hump, and the pig kept his snout. 因此骆驼保住了它的驼峰，猪也保住了它的鼻子。
