 　　Ethan watched his brother until the trees hid him. Then the boy waited. 伊桑一直看着哥哥，直到他隐没在树林当中。接下来，他开始等待。

　　How quiet everything seemed! But suddenly he heard first one shot¹ and then another. 四周似乎很安静！突然他听到了一声枪响，接下来又是一声。

　　"Those men have shot some poor animal, "thought Ethan." 这些人射杀了可怜的动物，伊桑想。

　　Oh, I hope it isn't one of the deer that come to the house every day to be fed." 哦，但愿不是每天来木屋吃食的小鹿。

　　The boy wanted very much to find out what had happened, and he ran as fast as he could go after his brother. 伊桑非常想知道发生了什么，于是他跟在哥哥的后面全力地跑了下去。

　　The path² on which Ethan ran went past a cave³ that was called Bears' Cave. 途中，伊桑还经过了一个叫熊穴的山洞。

　　Ethan had often looked at this cave, because the Captain had told him that a bear was asleep in it for the winter. 伊桑经常观察这个山洞，哥哥告诉他有一只熊在里面冬眠。

　　All at once the boy heard his brother's voice. 突然，伊桑听到了哥哥的声音。

　　A minute later he was beside the Captain, who was talking to two hunters⁴. 很快，他跑到了哥哥的身旁，他正在对两个捕猎者说话。

　　At their feet lay a large, brown bear that they had killed. 他们的脚下躺着一只被射杀了的大棕熊。

　　The Captain took the hunters' guns away from them. 哥哥收缴了捕猎者手中的枪支。

　　Then he said to Ethan, "I will have to take these men out of the forest." 他跟伊桑说，我要把这两个人带出森林。

　　And he marched them before him down the path. 然后，他就赶着他们走下了山。

　　While Ethan was looking sadly⁵ at the big bear, he heard a cry from the cave, "Wa-a-ah!" 伊桑伤心地看着大棕熊，这时，山洞里传来了哇哇的哭声。

　　It sounded almost like a real baby. 听起来像是婴儿的哭声。

　　"Why, it must be a baby bear, "said the boy." 哎呀，一定是个熊宝宝，伊桑说。
