 　　Now of course¹ the mail² box couldn't move from its corner. 当然邮箱自己不能从它所在的角落移动。

　　"I have to stay right where I am," it thought³. 我还要待在原地，它想。

　　"But I'll tell the postman about the valentine when he comes at three o'clock." 但是邮递员三点钟来的时候，我会跟他说这个情人节贺卡的。

　　At three o'clock there was⁴ the sound of a key in the door of the mail box. 三点钟的时候，邮箱口传来了开锁的声音。

　　There stood⁶ the postman in his gray⁷ suit⁸ with yellow buttons⁹.  那里站着邮递员，他穿着带有黄色纽扣的灰色制服。

　　Each of the buttons had¹⁰ on it a picture of a post man handing out a letter. 每个纽扣上面都有一个邮递员分发信件的图像。

　　Over his shoulder the postman carried a bag, and into this bag he put the letters he found¹¹ in the mail box. 邮递员的肩膀上还背了一个包，他把在邮箱里找到的信件都放进包里。

　　"Please take this valentine to the little girl who lives on the farm," said¹² the mail box to the postman. 请把这个情人节贺卡寄给那个住在农场上的小姑娘，邮箱跟邮差说。

　　"I can't go to the farm," answered the postman," but I will take the valentine to the post office." 我去不了农场，但我会把这个情人节贺卡带回邮局，邮递员回答说。

　　Then the postman closed¹³ the mail box and walked back to the post office. 于是邮递员关上了邮箱，回邮局去了。

　　"Please send this valentine to the little girl on the farm," said the postman to a clerk¹⁴ in the post office, 请把这个情人节贺卡寄给那个农场上的小姑娘，邮递员跟邮局的一个工作人员说，

　　as⁵ he put the letters in his bag on to a large, flat table. 他一边说着，一边把自己袋子里的信倒在了一个又大又平的桌子上。

　　It was then that the valentine lost its stamp. 就在这时情人节贺卡的邮票掉了。

　　With all the bumping¹⁵, the stamp had become looser¹⁶ and looser and now was gone. 在不断的颠簸中，邮票越来越松，现在不见了。
