 　　Years went by, and the family grew larger. 数年以后，这个家庭的成员变多了。

　　Eight boys, one after the other, had worn¹ the fairy² shoes, but the shoes were still as good as new. 八个男孩一个接着一个穿过了神奇的鞋子，但是鞋子还是像新的一样好。

　　And just as the fairy had said, the feet in the fairy shoes always went where they were sent, and always came back home on time. 正像仙女所说的那样，孩子脚上穿了这双鞋子，总能到达打发他们去的地方，而且总能按时回到家里。

　　At last it was Timothy's turn to wear the shoes. 最后轮到蒂莫西穿这双鞋子了。

　　He was the youngest of the nine sons, and he had been much petted by everyone. 他是九个男孩里最小的一个，大家都很宠他。

　　He wanted his own way in everything, and his feet often went wherever³ they pleased. 不管什么事情，他都很任性，他的脚总是由着性子乱跑。

　　At last the little boy stayed away from school so often, and was late for dinner so many times, 这个小男孩经常旷课，而且很多次不按时回来吃晚饭，

　　that his mother said, "Tim, you must wear the fairy shoes." 终于他的妈妈说：“蒂姆，你必须要穿那神奇的鞋子了。”

　　So the shoes were shined; and one morning Timothy put them on to wear to school. 于是这双鞋子又焕然一新了。一天早上，蒂莫西穿上这双鞋，准备去学校。

　　I hope you will be a good boy, Tim, said his mother. 妈妈说：“蒂姆，我希望你是个好孩子。

　　"You must not stop by the way or go any place except to school. 你在路上不能停，也不能去学校以外的其他地方。

　　For if you do, these shoes will pinch⁴ you, and you will be sure to get into trouble." 如果你那样做了，这双鞋子就会夹你，你一定会遇到麻烦的。

　　Tim's mother held him by the right arm while she told him these things, 告诉他这些事情的时候，蒂姆的妈妈拉住他的右臂，

　　but Tim's left arm and both his legs were already as far away as he could stretch⁵ them. 但是蒂姆的左臂和双腿已经远远地伸出去准备走了。
