 Then David played softly¹ on his harp² and sang in a low, sweet voice. 接着，大卫轻轻地拨动了他的竖琴，用低沉而甜美的声音唱起了歌。

After a while the king lifted his head and looked at the young boy. 不一会儿，国王抬起了头，看了看这个年轻男孩。

David sang on and on. 大卫继续唱着。

He sang of green pastures³ and of the little brooks⁴ that ran through the fields, 他唱到了绿色的草原和那穿过田野的溪流，

David ended his song, and for a while the room was very still. 大卫唱完了歌，一时间，屋子里十分安静。

At last the king said, in a gentle voice, "Come here, my boy." 终于，国王非常温柔地说：到这儿来，我的孩子。

When David went forward, Saul put his hands upon the boy's shoulders. 大卫走向前，扫罗把手搭在男孩的肩膀上说：

I must go back to my father and mother, answered David, "but I will come to you, dear King, whenever you wish." 我必须回到我的父母身边，大卫回答说，但是敬爱的国王，只要您召唤，我随时都会来。

That night, when David reached home, he cried joyfully⁵ to his mother, "At last I have been able to help my king!" 那天晚上，大卫回到了家中，他高兴地对他妈妈说：我终于能够帮助国王了！

Months passed, and David was still a quiet, faithful⁶ shepherd⁷ boy. 几个月过去了，大卫还是一个安静、诚实的牧童。
