 　　"How many goodly creatures are there here!" The singing words mocked him derisively¹.

　　“这儿有多少美好的生灵！一”那歌声嘲弄着他。

　　How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world …

　　"Soma distribution!" shouted a loud voice. "In good order, please. Hurry up there."

　　“领唆麻了，”一个声音高叫，“排好队。那边的人，快一点。”

　　A door had been opened, a table and chair carried into the vestibule.

　　刚才有一道门已经打开，一套桌椅已经搬到走廊上。

　　The voice was that of a jaunty² young Alpha, who had entered carrying a black iron cash-box.

　　说话的是一个神气的年轻阿尔法。他已经捧着一个黑铁的钱箱走了进来。

　　A murmur³ of satisfaction went up from the expectant twins. They forgot all about the Savage⁴.

　　多生子们怀着欲望，发出一阵满意的呢喃，把野蛮人全忘了。

　　Their attention was now focused on the black cash-box, which the young man had placed on the table, and was now in process of unlocking.

　　现在他们的注意力集中到了那黑铁钱箱上。年轻人已把钱箱放在桌上，正在打开。

　　The lid was lifted.

　　箱盖揭开了。

　　"Oo-oh!" said all the hundred and sixty-two simultaneously⁵, as though they were looking at fireworks.

　　“呜——哇！”一百六十二个人同声叫了起来，像是在看焰火。

　　The young man took out a handful of tiny pill-boxes.

　　年轻人取出一把小药盒，

　　"Now," he said peremptorily,"step forward, please. One at a time, and no shoving."

　　“现在，”他专断地说，“请走上来。一次一个，不要挤。”

　　One at a time, with no shoving, the twins stepped forward.

　　多生子挨次走了上去，没有拥挤。

　　First two males, then a female, then another male, then three females, then …

　　先是两个男性，然后是一个女性，再是一个男性，三个女性，然后……

　　The Savage stood looking on. "O brave new world, O brave new world …" In his mind the singing words seemed to change their tone.

　　野蛮人站在那儿望着。“啊，美妙的新世界……”他心里的歌似乎改变了调子。

　　They had mocked him through his misery⁶ and remorse⁷, mocked him with how hideous⁸ a note of cynical⁹ derision!

　　Fiendishly laughing, they had insisted on the low squalor, the nauseous ugliness of the nightmare.

　　Now, suddenly, they trumpeted¹⁰ a call to arms. "O brave new world!"
