Hi everyone, I'm Asieh Namdar at the CNN.com Newsroom in Atlanta, here is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Pope Benedict delivered a message of hope and unity1 at New York St. Patrick's Cathedral today, and he again addressed the clergy2 sexual abuse scandal at a mass attended by priests and nuns3.
*“I will say a word about the sexual abuse that has caused so much suffering. I have already had occasion to speak of this, and of the resulting damage to the community of the faithful. Here I simply wish to assure you, dear priests and religious, of my spiritual closeness as you strive to respond with Christian4 hope to the continuing challenges that this situation presents.”
The Pope heads to young Catholics later this afternoon for youth rally at a Catholic Seminary.
A Texas judge has ordered hundreds of children taken from a FLDS compound to remain in state custody5.
“Well I think it was probably a difficult decision for her, she's obviously facing something unprecedented6 and under the circumstances I think probably did best that she could do and trying to work through the situation. As ad litem for the children, we were a little disappointed in what process turned out to be and obviously we will be appealing and continuing with our children's rights.”
The children are being placed in temporary homes. The judge also ordered DNA7 testing, so the state can match children to their biological parents.
A Russian space capsule is now back on earth but it misses its mark on landing. The Soyuz spacecraft landed 260 miles away from its target in Kazakhstan. It was carrying South Korea's first astronaut and three others. The crew is being examined, but a NASA official at Russian command center says everyone appears fine.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is looking into possible health hazard of lead in artificial turf. Two fields in New Jersey8 were closed this week after a Health official detected unexpectedly high-levels of lead in the turf. Industrial officials say the product is safe.
And the Olympic torch made it through the streets of Bangkok peacefully. Protestors were allowed to attend the relay behind barricades9. Officials warned that if any foreigners caused disruptions, they would be deported10.
And those are the headlines this hour. For more on these stories and other news of the day, CNN is your source on line on TV or when you are on the go.
