It’s the final day of a historic US visit by Pope Benedict XVI. He began the day with a blessing1 at Ground Zero. He walked to a spot by the north tower’s footprints, knelt in silent prayer then rose to light a candle in memory of those who died September 11th, 2001.
“God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world: peace in hearts of all men and women, and peace among the nations of the earth. Turn to your way of love those whose hearts and minds are consumed with hatred2.”
The Pope also prayed with families who lost loved ones in the attacks this afternoon. The pontiff is saying Mass at Yankee Stadium before heading back home to the Vatican tonight.
The clock is ticking down for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. They are both scrambling3 for votes in Pennsylvania ahead of Tuesday’s primary there. And both are throwing negative jabs on one another. Clinton says the race is a choice between flash and substance; Obama says Clinton is a slash-and-burn game player who will say whatever people want to hear to win.
Rescue crews are still searching for 18 fishermen who went missing after a tropical storm swept over southeastern China. Five rescue ships and two helicopters are canvassing4 the search area for survivors5. So far, they've found 44 of the fishermen who were stranded6 at sea. China has contacted Vietnam and the Philippines to see if their rescue ships have picked up any survivors.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is focusing on military and political progress in talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki. Her unannounced visit to Baghdad comes as US and Iraq forces battle Shiite militants7 in nearby Sadr city district.
And Britain's Prince William has taken the term "making a grand entrance" to a new level. Britain's Defense8 Ministry9 has confirmed the prince landed a helicopter in his girlfriend's backyard while on a training mission. The ministry statement says the landing was part of their prince's Royal Air Force training. The prince’s brother Harry10 was also on board the April 3rd flight. No one got on or off the aircraft.
