Captain Peleg in his gruff voice loudly hailed us from his wigwam, saying he had not suspected my friend was a cannibal,  法勒船长在他的小房子里,用他那粗卤的声音哇啦哇啦地招呼我们,说他没猜想到我的朋友是个生番,

and furthermore announcing that he let no cannibals on board that craft, unless they previously³ produced their papers. 还声明他不许生番上他那只船,除非事先拿出证件来。

What do you mean by that, Captain Peleg? said I, now jumping on the bulwarks⁴, and leaving my comrade standing⁵ on the wharf. 你这样说是什么意思,法勒船长?我跳上舷墙,撇下我的同伴站在码头上,说道。

I mean, he replied, he must show his papers. 我是说,他回答道,他必须出示他的证件。

Yes, said Captain Bildad in his hollow voice, sticking his head from behind Peleg's, out of the wigwam.  不错,比勒达船长声音空泛地说,他站在法勒背后,从小房子里伸出头来。

He must show that he's converted. Son of darkness, he added, turning to Queequeg, art thou at present in communion with any Christian⁶ church? 他得出示他已经改教的证件。小魔王,他说过后,又对魁魁格说,你现在可跟任何的基督教堂发生关系?

1 wharf
