And what tune¹ is it ye pull to, men? 你们大家该抱什么态度呢?

A dead whale or a stove boat! 不是鲸死就是艇破!

More and more strangely and fiercely glad and approving, grew the countenance² of the old man at every shout; while the mariners³ began to gaze curiously⁴ at each other,  每一声叫喊,都使这老人的脸色越来越显得奇特和非常快活满意;水手们也都开始好奇地彼此面面相觑,

as if marvelling⁵ how it was that they themselves became so excited at such seemingly purposeless questions. 仿佛为他们听到这种似乎是毫无意义的问题,竟会如此激动而觉得诧异。

But, they were all eagerness again, as Ahab, now half-revolving in his pivot-hole, with one hand reaching high up a shroud⁶, and tightly, almost convulsively grasping it, addressed them thus: 但是,他们又全都兴奋起来了,因为这时,亚哈的脚插在他那只镟孔里,半转着身子,一只手伸得高高地抓着护桅索,几乎是用死劲地紧紧抓着,对他们这样说:

All ye mast-headers have before now heard me give orders about a white whale.  你们全体桅顶

1 tune
