 Captain Ahab, said Starbuck, who, with Stubb and Flask¹, had thus far been eyeing his superior with increasing surprise, but at last seemed struck with a thought which somewhat explained all the wonder.  亚哈船长,斯达巴克说,他跟斯塔布和弗拉斯克一直就越来越惊讶地盯着他的上司看,不过,最后好象突然想到一种足以说明这一切的奇迹的事情似的。

Captain Ahab, I have heard of Moby Dick--but it was not Moby Dick that took off thy leg? 亚哈船长,我也听到过莫比－迪克,不过,搞掉你的腿的该不是莫比－迪克吧?

Who told thee that? cried Ahab; then pausing, Aye, Starbuck; aye, my hearties² all round; it was Moby Dick that dismasted me;  谁说的?亚哈大声叫道;顿了一会,是呀,斯达巴克,是呀,我的全体伙伴呀;搞掉我的腿的就是莫比－迪克;

Moby Dick that brought me to this dead stump³ I stand on now.  莫比－迪克弄得我只剩这只站在这里的死桩头了,

Aye, aye, he shouted with a terrific, loud, animal sob⁴, like that of a heart-stricken moose;  是呀,是呀,他以一种可怖的。高声的。兽性的呜咽声气叫嚷起来,直象是一只被打中了心脏的麋鹿的呜咽声;

Aye, aye! it was that accursed white whale that razeed me; made a poor pegging⁵ lubber of me for ever and a day!  是呀,是呀,折掉了我的腿的就是那条该死的白鲸呀;它一下子就弄得我永远是个可怜的独脚水手了!

Then tossing both arms, with measureless imprecations he shouted out:  接着,他两臂一甩,以无比恨毒的声气高声叫嚷起来:

Aye, aye! and I'll chase him round Good Hope, and round the Horn, and round the Norway Maelstrom⁶, and round perdition's flames before I give him up.  是呀,是呀!我要走遍好望角,走遍合恩角,走遍挪威的大涡流,走遍地狱的火坑去追击到它后,这才撒手。

And this is what ye have shipped for, men! to chase that white whale on both sides of land, and over all sides of earth, till he spouts⁷ black blood and rolls fin⁸ out.  这就是雇你们来做的事,朋友们!要在海里,要到天涯海角去追击它,直追击得它喷出黑血,落尽鱼鳍。

What say ye, men, will ye splice⁹ hands on it, now? I think ye do look brave. 现在,朋友们,你们觉得怎样,你们都会一齐来干么?我想你们都是很勇敢的。

1 flask   

n.瓶，火药筒，砂箱
