 　　Gentlemen, a strange fatality¹ pervades² the whole career of these events, as if verily mapped out before the world itself was charted. 诸位先生，这种种事变的整个发展过程就是充满着一种奇妙的天意，仿佛在世界本身还未形成以前就已经正确地策划完妥。

　　The mutineer was the bowsman of the mate, and when fast to a fish,  这个叛乱者，刚好是大副那只小艇的头桨手，而且，等到要拴鲸的时候，

　　it was his duty to sit next him, while Radney stood up with his lance in the prow³, and haul in or slacken the line, at the word of command. 按照职守，他还应该坐在大副身边，那时，拉德尼手里拿着鱼枪，站在船头，他就得随着命令，把捕鲸索或拉或放。

　　Moreover, when the four boats were lowered, the mate's got the start; and none howled more fiercely with delight than did Steelkilt, as he strained at his oar⁴.  而当那四只小艇都放下去的时候，大副的小艇又必须先划出去；斯蒂尔基尔特一扳着桨，他那快活的号叫声真是再响也没有了。

　　After a stiff pull, their harpooneer got fast, and, spear in hand, Radney sprang to the bow. 死劲地划了一阵后，标枪手就把鲸拴住了，于是拉德尼手里拿着鱼枪，跳到了船头。

　　He was always a furious man, it seems, in a boat. 这个人往往是一上小艇，就好象变成个狂暴的人。

　　And now his bandaged cry was, to beach him on the whale's topmost back. 这时，他那扎着绷带的嘴里大叫大嚷地要他们把他送上大鲸那高耸的背峰。

　　Nothing loath⁵, his bowsman hauled him up and up, through a blinding foam⁶ that blent two whitenesses together;  他的头桨手高高兴兴地把他曳上去，越曳越高，四周尽是一片叫人发眩的泡沫，把两种白色交混在一起；

　　till of a sudden the boat struck as against a sunken ledge⁷, and keeling over, spilled out the standing⁸ mate. 突然间，小艇象是碰上沉在海里的岩架，砰咚一撞，翻了过去，把那个站着的大副给倒了出去。

　　That instant, as he fell on the whale's slippery back, the boat righted, and was dashed aside by the swell⁹, 就在他跌落在滑溜溜的鲸背上的这个时候，小艇又翻过身来，被滚滚的浪涛冲到一旁：

　　while Radney was tossed over into the sea, on the other flank of the whale. 拉德尼被浪涛一阵翻腾，掉进海里，摔到大鲸的另一边去。

　　He struck out through the spray, and, for an instant, was dimly seen through that veil, wildly seeking to remove himself from the eye of Moby Dick.  他从浪花里挣了出来，一时间透过那重雾障，还可以依稀看到他在狂急地设法不让莫比－迪克看到他。

1 fatality
