The governing body of the Church of England has voted by a 2:1 majority to allow the ordination1 of Women Bishops3. About 1300 clergy4 have threatened to leave the church if safeguards will not agree to reassure5 traditionalists. Here's our religious affairs correspondent Robert Pigott.
This protracted6 debate has produced a historic result. What was in doubt this morning now seems all but certain that women will be ordained7 as bishops in the Church of England. The vote was conclusive8 in all three Houses of the Synod and was accompanied by emotional scenes . It provided only for a 'Code of Practice' giving as-yet unspecified exemptions9 for traditionalists who do not want to serve under a woman bishop2. One Bishop and several clergy were in tears, and others prayed silently. The result has been greeted with joy by women and liberals who say that a long discrimination against women has been broken.

Shares in the Internet company Yahoo! have jumped by more than 10% following comments by the software giant Microsoft that it was willing to reopen talks to buy all or part of the company. Yahoo! turned down a 47-billion-dollar-offer in May. The BBC North America business correspondent says the makeup10 of the senior management team at Yahoo! remains11 a sticking point.
