　　1、A boy rambling¹ in the woods many years ago, in a part of America where bears used to live, one day found the cub² of a Black Bear. 1、很多年前一个男孩在美洲的一个树林里闲逛，那儿曾有熊栖息。一天他发现了一个只黑熊的幼崽，

　　It was very young, and looked like a little dog covered all over with thick brown hair. 它很幼小，看起来就像是一只浑身布满了浓密棕毛的小狗。

　　The boy carried it home. It was fed and brought up about the house, and soon became as tame as a dog. 男孩把小熊带回了家。它在房子里散养着长大了，很快就象一条狗一样的温顺。

　　Every day the boy had to go to school some way off. 每天男孩需要走一段路去上学。

　　It was not long before the bear went with him, and it used to roam³ about the fields till school was over. 小熊跟着他一起去，没过多久就习惯了在田里漫游直到男孩放学。

　　At first the other boys were afraid of Henry's bear, but before long they became great friends. 最初其他的男孩子们害怕亨利的熊，但很快他们就成了很好的朋友。

　　Many of them used to bring their dinners to school in small bags or baskets. 他们当中有许多都曾把晚餐用小袋子或框装好带到学校，

　　These were hung on pegs⁴ on the wall, and at the play-hour they were taken down, 挂在墙上的木桩上。等到了自由活动的时间，他们把食物袋取下来，

　　and the bear was sure then to get a good share of the bread and butter, and apples and pears. 而小熊肯定会分到它的那一份面包、黄油、苹果和梨。

　　Things went on in this way for a long time; but one day the animal was nowhere to be seen. 这样一直过了很久，但是有一天怎么也找不到这只小兽了。

　　It had found its way to the woods, and did not return. Search was made for it, but without success. 它发现了去树林的路，然后就没有回来过。大家有去找过它，但都没有找到。

　　2、Many years passed away, in which time great changes took place in the school.  2、很多年过去了，学校里也发生了很多变化。

　　The old master died, and a new one took his place. 老校长死了，一个新人接替了校长的位置。

　　A new set of boys filled the seats in the old school-house. 一群新的男孩们坐在老校舍的座位上。

　　One very cold wintry day, while the master was out, a boy chanced to leave the door half open,  一个寒冷的冬天，当校长不在时，一个男孩偶然地任校门半开着，

　　and on a sudden a large black bear walked into the school! 突然一只大黑熊走进了学校！

　　The boys were in terror. Some ran to the door, others made for the tables. 男孩们害怕极了。一些跑向了门，另一些跑向写字台。

　　One big fellow jumped out of the window. Two or three little girls hid themselves under the desks. 一个大家伙从窗户里跳了出来。两三个小女孩藏在课桌底下。

　　But one brave boy seized a piece of wood, and told the girls not to be afraid, for he would protect them! 但是一个勇敢的男孩抓起一个木棍，告诉女孩们不要害怕，因为他会保护她们！

　　But the bear did not harm any one. It walked up quietly to the fire, and warmed itself. 但是这只熊没有伤害任何人。它静静地走向火炉，然后为自己取暖。

　　It seemed to be very much at home, and to feel very glad to get into such warm, snug⁵ quarters. 它看上去就像是在自己的家里一样，感受着温暖舒适的房间带来的愉悦。

　　It sat by the fire for a short time, and then walked up to the wall where the dinner baskets of the scholars were hanging. 它在火旁稍坐了一会儿，然后走向墙上挂着的学员们的晚餐篮。

　　Standing⁶ on its hind⁷ feet, it put its paw into the baskets, and helped itself to the bread and fruit, and other good things in them! 用后脚站立着，它把前爪伸进餐篮，自顾地吃起了面包、水果和其他装在里面的好东西！

　　It then quietly walked out of the school by the way it had walked in. 然后它从进入校园的原路又走出的校园。

　　In the meantime, the boy who had jumped out of the window had alarmed the village. 与此同时，从窗户里跳出来的那男孩通报了整个村子。

　　A number of young men started with their guns, to shoot the bear. 很多年轻人开始拿起枪要射杀这只熊。

　　As its track was very plain in the snow, they soon came up with it, and killed it. 由于脚印在雪里很清晰，他们很快找到了它，把它杀了。

　　Then it was that they found, by certain marks upon its skin, that the poor bear was no enemy,  后来他们从这只熊皮上找到了一个特殊的记号，才发现这只熊不是害人的兽，

　　but the old friend of their own schooldays! 而是他们当年上学时的老伙伴！

　　Great was the sorrow felt for its death. 于是为它的死很是悲伤。

1 rambling   

adj.[建]凌乱的，杂乱的

2 cub

adj.后面的，后部的
