　　What is the benchmark? 什么是基准？

　　It is a point used¹ in the survey². 它是调查中使用的要点。

　　Usual³, numbers used as⁴ benchmarks are five, ten, fifteen, twenty and so on. 通常，作为基准的数字是5、10、15、20等等。

　　Why is a benchmark important⁵? 为什么基准很重要？

　　Without a benchmark, we cannot compare⁶ anything. 没有基准，我们就无法比较任何东西。

　　For example, let's say you ate⁷ strawberries. 例如，我们假设你吃草莓。

　　Also you recorded⁸ how many strawberry you ate. 你还记录了你吃了多少草莓。

　　Did⁹ you eat a lot, or did you eat only a few¹⁰? 你吃得多还是吃得少？

　　If there is no benchmark, you will not know if you ate many or few. 如果没有基准，你就不知道你吃得多还是少。

　　But if more than five strawberries are many, you can say I ate six strawberries, so I had¹¹ many strawberries. 但如果超过五颗算多的话，你可以说我吃了六颗，所以我吃了很多草莓。

　　The benchmark is five strawberries. 这个基准就是五颗草莓。

• I used to work until nearly 6:00 o'clock each day.我过去常常工作到6:00左右。
• He used to walk anywhere from two to five miles an hour.他过去经常一小时走二至五英里。

2 survey   

n.调查；考察；测验

参考例句：

• Survey the car before you buy it.买车之前先对它鉴定一下。
• His report is more than a survey.他的报告不只是一份调查。

3 usual   

adj.通常的；平常的

参考例句：

• I got up at six that morning as usual.像往常一样那天早上我六点起床。
• It's usual to have a holiday in summer.夏天休假是惯例。

4 as   

conj.按照；如同

参考例句：

• He got work in a hotel as a waiter.他在一家旅馆找到了当服务生的工作。
• In the hotel,the old men were drinking away as usual.在旅馆里，这些老人和往常一样喝个不停。

5 important   

adj.重要的；重大的；严重的

参考例句：

• It's important to find out what he is doing.弄清他在干什么是重要的。
• This is a very important problem.这个问题很重要。

6 compare   

vt.(to，with)比较；(to)把…比作；vi.相比

参考例句：

• How does your new house compare with your old one?你的新房子和你的旧房子比起来怎样？
• It is hard to compare.很难比较。

7 ate   

v.吃，eat的过去式

参考例句：

• I ate a whole box of chocolates.我吃了一整盒巧克力。
• It's a long time since she ate out last time.她很长一段时间没在外面吃饭了。

8 recorded   

v.记录，录音，拍摄( record的过去式和过去分词 )；标明；发表正式（或法律方面的）声明；演奏音乐供录制

参考例句：

• He has recorded the narration for the production. 他录制了这部作品的解说词。
• Blood pressure and respiration are also recorded. 血压和呼吸也做了记录。

9 did   

v.动词do的过去式

参考例句：

• How many goals did you score in the last game?上一场比赛你们进了几个球？
• Why did you choose basketball in the first place?你为何首先选择篮球呢？

10 few   

adj.很少的，不多的，少数的；int.少数的

参考例句：

• There are few woods in that area.那个地区几乎没有森林。
• I have a few questions.我有些问题要问你。

11 had   

vbl.have的过去式和过去分词；conj.有

参考例句：

• I just had a good idea!我有个好主意！
• The boy had a small branch of a tree in his hand.这个男孩手上拿一条小树枝。
