Top 5 Songs for Week Ending Jan. 9
This is the Top Five Countdown featuring the five most popular songs in the Billboard1 Hot 100 Pop Singles chart, for the week ending Jan. 9, 2016.
The chart is sleeping off a New Year’s hangover apparently2, because nothing really changes this week.
Number 5: Justin Bieber "What Do You Mean"
In fifth place, Justin Bieber holds steady with “What Do You Mean?”
Billboard reports that Justin welcomed the new year by performing at a party on the Caribbean island of St. Bart’s. The host? Movie actor Leonardo DiCaprio. Also in attendance were Robin3 Thicke and from the U.K., Duchess Catherine’s brother, James Middleton.
Number 4: Drake "Hotline Bling"
Drake may be leaving the hit list…but he isn’t going far: he may show up on Rihanna’s next album. He slips a slot to fourth place with “Hotline Bling.”
Snippets of Drake's vocals4 on Rihanna’s Twitter page suggest he may turn up on her eagerly-awaited Anti album…and that wouldn’t be a surprise, given their past relationship, both personal and professional. There’s no word on when Anti will drop…and let’s not forget Drake has an album in the pipeline5 as well.
Number 3: Justin Bieber "Love Yourself"
Taking over third place is our friend Justin Bieber with “Love Yourself,” which he co-wrote with Ed Sheeran. Justin’s been vacationing in the Caribbean with his family and model Hailey Baldwin, and things may be heating up between those two: on Sunday, he tweeted photos of them kissing and all dressed up for a night out.
Number 2: Justin Bieber "Sorry"
Justin holds in second place with “Sorry,” and this may be a good time to recall just how Bieber began his rise to fame. Do you remember? It all began in 2007, when his mother posted a YouTube video of 12-year-old Justin singing Ne-Yo’s song “So Sick” at a local competition. She followed with videos of her son singing cover versions of other songs…and the rest is musical history.
Number 1: Adele "Hello"
Speaking of making history, Adele is your countdown champ for a ninth huge week with “Hello.” Her 25 album spends a sixth week atop the album list; at 7.44 million copies in the U.S. alone, it’s the biggest seller of any calendar year since 2004. Back then, Usher’s Confessions6 sold 7.98 million copies.
Now that 2016 is in full swing, what will the charts send us? We'll find out together next week!
