Search efforts will continue today for 11 people missing after a boat sank off the Cocos Islands. One person is dead and 27 others have been rescued. A number of planes have been deployed¹ to search for survivors² this morning. The Federal Government won't confirm whether those on board were asylum³ seekers.

A new opinion poll shows support for the Federal Government has slumped⁴ in the wake of the ongoing⁵ debate over asylum seekers. The Newspoll in The Australian shows the gap between Labor⁶ and the Coalition⁷ has narrowed by 14 points in the past fortnight. On a two-party preferred basis, Labor now only leads the Coalition 52% to 48%. Opposition⁸ frontbencher Joe Hockey says the message to the Prime Minister is clear.

But Mr. Rudd has maintained a commanding lead over the Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull in the preferred prime minister stakes.
