The government has imposed a curfew across much of Thailand as fires continue to rage in Bangkok. Yesterday, troops stormed a blockade set up by anti-government protesters and the rest of red-shirt leaders. More than 40 people have died in political violence over the past week.

A 49-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the murder of Sydney nurse Michelle Beets¹. The man was arrested at his Lane Cove² unit in order to supply the police with a

sample of his DNA³. No charges have been laid.

The political future of Queensland Liberal MP Michael Johnson could be decided⁴ today. Mr. Johnson will meet the Liberal National Party state executive to answer questions about his business dealings. He's accused of trying to receive kickbacks⁵ from a coal deal and could be thrown out of the party. Mr. Johnson rejected the allegations.

The Australian head of Rio Tinto will meet Treasury⁶ officials today to discuss the proposed new super profits tax. Rio Tinto says it wants to negotiate on all aspects, so the Government's plans to introduce a 40 per cent tax on the resources sector⁷. BHP Billiton is due to meet Treasury officials tomorrow.

And oil from the Gulf⁸ of Mexico spill has entered an ocean current. It could threaten Florida's west coast. Satellite pictures show the oil could reach coral reefs around Florida in six days. BP estimates about 5,000 barrels a day has leaked from the well which sank in April.
