US special counsel Robert Mueller has broken his silence about the Russia investigation¹ — and says charging Donald Trump² was not an option. In a statement in Washington overnight, Mr Mueller also announced his retirement³ from the Justice Department as he officially closed the investigation. Speaking publicly for the first time since he was appointed head of the inquiry⁴, Mr Mueller emphasised that his report did not exonerate⁵ the president. President Trump says Mr Mueller's statement changes nothing and that the case is closed.

A 14-year-old boy and 10-year-old girl, has been charged over a fatal car crash north of Brisbane, and will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act in Queensland. Both children have been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle. A 14-year-old boy was killed, while a 13-year-old boy and three girls were injured.

A US extradition⁸ hearing in Britain for Wikileaks founder⁹, Julian Assange, has been delayed because of his ill health. Mr Assange was due to take part via video link from the London prison where he is serving a 50 week sentence for skipping bail¹⁰. His lawyers have managed to have the hearing delayed until mid⁶ June after it was revealed Mr Assange has been moved to a medical ward¹¹ in the prison.
